The role

Four skills, rarely found in one CV

Forward Deployed Engineers turn enterprise AI pilots into paying, company-wide deployments. The job asks for all four of these at once.

  • Ships production code

Ships real software into enterprise environments, not just prototypes and demos.

  • Sits with the customer

Works on site with enterprise teams, from IT and security to the business, and earns their trust.

  • Scopes messy problems

Turns vague business needs into a plan that survives procurement, security review and legacy systems.

  • Owns the outcome

Takes a pilot all the way to rollout, and measures success by what the customer gets.

Why they're rare

Enterprise FDEs are hard to find. In regulated industries, even more so.

Deploying AI inside a bank, an insurer or a hospital group is a different job from shipping it to a startup. Few engineers have done it, and fewer still have done it well.

  • Regulation shapes every deployment

From GDPR and the EU AI Act in Europe to financial and healthcare rules everywhere. An enterprise FDE designs for compliance from day one, not after the security review.

  • AI meets decades of legacy

Enterprises run on SAP, mainframes, on-premise data centres and systems older than most startups. AI only creates value once it's wired into them.

  • Many stakeholders, many languages

IT, security, procurement, works councils and business owners, often across several countries. Getting to yes takes judgment, not just code.

  • Everyone is hiring the same few

The FDE role is new. Few engineers have run it inside a regulated enterprise, and every agentic company is competing for the ones who have.

The problem

Enterprise deals stall without the right FDE

  • For agentic companies

Pilots stall between proof of concept and rollout. Standard interviews test coding, not enterprise judgment, and job posts draw floods of engineers who have never sat with a corporate customer.

  • For outstanding but unconventional candidates

Enterprise experience rarely reads well on a CV. Titles vary, from solutions engineer to applied AI engineer, and people who learned the job inside a consultancy or a corporate IT team get filtered out.

  • For engineers who are looking for a change

There is no clear path in. Engineers who want to work with enterprise customers, and consultants who want to get closer to code, have no structured way to close the gap.
